HeartCode® PALS Online + Skills Session – American Heart Association
This course is composed of online coursework and a skills session. After completing the required online portion, participants will attend this hands-on session to demonstrate the critical skills needed for certification.
What You’ll Be Tested On:
To successfully pass this session and receive your PALS Provider eCard, you must demonstrate competence in the following areas:
High-quality Basic Life Support (BLS) for infants and children, including:
CPR and rescue breathing
AED use
Choking relief techniques
Application of the Pediatric Assessment Triangle and primary/secondary assessment approaches
Recognition and treatment of:
Respiratory distress/failure
Shock
Cardiac arrest
Use of PALS algorithms for:
Bradycardia
Tachycardia
Cardiac arrest
Post–cardiac arrest care
Airway management using airway adjuncts or intubation, as appropriate
Leadership and teamwork during a pediatric emergency, including running a full “code”
About the Code Simulation:
The code portion of the session is scenario-based, featuring a live cardiac monitor, digital manikins, and a simulated patient. These dynamic scenarios reflect real-life pediatric emergencies where the patient’s condition may change at any moment. You are expected to adapt to those changes, demonstrate sound clinical judgment, and provide appropriate care based on current PALS protocols.
Mental and Physical Performance Required:
This session involves both mental and physical skill application. Participants must think critically, make rapid clinical decisions, and physically perform resuscitative actions as a team leader or team member.
BLS Reminder:
You are expected to have a strong working knowledge of BLS. If you feel unsure or have forgotten your BLS skills, it is highly recommended that you review the AHA BLS Provider Manual, HeartCode® BLS online course, or take a new BLS class before attending.
Important: This session is an evaluation, not a training class. Please arrive prepared to confidently demonstrate all required skills and judgment.
Online Portion: Please allot 4-6 hours for
completion.
In-Person Classroom Time: 3hrs
To successfully pass this course, you must:
1. Complete the “Online Portion”. This consists of self-paced videos and. Completed evidence must submitted via text or email
2. Complete “Online Portion” prior taking “In-person Portion”
3. Complete “In-person Instructor Led Portion”

This CPR course requires a solid understanding of the skills taught in the Basic Life Support course. Participants will be tested on these prerequisite skills during practical scenarios.
If you do not feel confident in your mastery of these skills, or if you had a poor learning experience in the prerequisite class, we strongly recommend retaking the Basic Life Support course, regardless of the validity of your current certification.
